A Fabulous British Colonial Butler's Desk
This Item Is ClosedA tall British Colonial carved-wood secretary with display top from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. This fabulous antique piece from India is as beautiful as it is functional. The upper case is comprised of a pair of arched glass panel doors, which open to reveal two shelves for displaying objects inside, within a richly-carved wood frame in foliage motif. The carved upper cornice slightly overhangs a top banding which is adorned in thick fleur de lis carvings. Rope, foliage, egg-and-dart and fleur de lis carvings accentuate and decorate this piece throughout various areas of trim. The secretarial mid section has been cleverly hidden behind the top faux-front drawer, which lays down to make up a shelf and reveals a series of small drawers and cubbies for storage within. What could make this Butler's desk even better? How about the central cubby inside the secretary having not one, but two secret compartments within it; located at left and right interior sides! Three full sized drawers make up the lower section of this chest, each fitted with a pair of rectangular metal pulls. The lower apron is trimmed in rope and egg-and-dart carvings, and raised nicely upon bun style feet. This piece has a black finish and lovely old patina, showing its rich history of use and age. Note that this tall cabinet breaks down into three pieces, making for easier transport and installation. This late 19th century British Colonial Butler's desk with display will make a handsome addition to any entry, living, or study area within your home.
