18th C. English Chinoiserie Tall Secretary
A English George III tall secretary, with its original chinoiserie painted exterior and interior, from the 18th century. This fabulous antique piece from England is as beautiful as it is functional; with both the exterior and interior embellished in an elegantly rendered chinoiserie comprised of exotic Asian landscapes, florals, and birds. The chinoiserie interior allows the perfect opportunity to display objects inside, while showcasing the pretty turquoise color which is an exquisite contrast to the primarily gold exterior. The upper case is crowned with a molded cornice and carved dentil trim. It houses a pair of arched-panel doors that open to reveal a wood shelving with scallop-carved edges. The secretarial mid section, found behind the slant-front which lays down to create a writing table, and reveals a series of small drawers and pigeon hole/cubbies for storage within. The dresser at bottom houses a slender full sized drawer atop a pair of half-sized drawers, and two full-sized graduated drawers below that, for a total of five drawers. The chest is raised nicely upon ogee bracket carved feet. The original finish, lovely patina, and overall condition is excellent for a piece this age. Note that this tall cabinet breaks down into two pieces, making for easier transport and installation. This 18th century English George III tall bookcase and secretary, with its fabulous original chinoiserie, will be an eye-catching room-maker; perfect for an entry foyer, livingroom, or bedroom.
