French Empire Artisan-Painted Commode
A French Empire commode, with an artisan hand-painted finish, from the 19th century. This antique chest from France has a rectangular-shaped top, which is slightly recessed upon a lower perimeter lip, and front has a pediment-style triangular cut-out that gives this piece a stately appearance. The body/case houses a drawer set within the top frieze, which slightly overhangs the pair of drawers below, which are flanked within a pair of three-dimensionally carved rounded columns set at each front side post, holding up the overhanging apron above and giving the front a nicely framed effect. The skirt is clean and linear and this piece is lifted upon four squared feet, slightly tapering to the floor. This piece has a newer/custom artisan finish with body primarily a slate color with brown showing through in some areas beneath. The drawer fronts are embellished with painted laurel wreaths and foliate in a nicely contrasting off-white color. This 19th century French Empire commode, with its architectural carvings and artfully painted exterior, will make a perfect decorative storage piece for just about any room in your home!
