Pair of Catfish Head Boat Prows

A pair of carved wood catfish head boat prows from Papua New Guinea. This pair of mid-20th Papua New Guinean boat prows have been carved out of wood and feature the head of a catfish. These boat prows are displayed on a custom black iron stand. The carvings on the prows are quite detailed down to the teeth and textured skin of the crocodile. Villagers in Papua New Guinea would adorn their canoes with such prows as they traveled the inland rivers, swap lands, lagoons and coastal regions of their territories. Papua New Guinea is a very rugged country with few roads so these canoes were an essential mode of transportation.
