Oceanic War Shield, Papua New Guinea
A carved wood war shield from the Ambunti mountain region, along the upper Sepik river in Papua New Guinea. This hand-carved war shield, and others similar, were commonly used throughout the tribal regions of Papua New Guinea as a defense against arrows from the fighting that occurred for competition of good land in this rugged terrain. The shield is an elongated, oval shape, carved with successive circular spirals paired vertically down the shield. This oceanic war shield is nicely displayed upon a custom black iron stand and would make a wonderful, and certainly conversational, decorative piece for a living-room, office, or library.
