A Gorgeous Antique Portuguese Church Panel
A beautifully hand-carved and painted wood Portuguese church fixture from the early 20th century. This antique panel, which originally decorated a Portuguese church in Goa (located in the Southwestern coastal region of India), stands just under 3.5 feet in height and features a large circular medallion, adorned with sun rays carved about the edges, and a raised three-dimensionally carved dove at its center. There is a nicely raised carved wood crest at top center, and fabulous scroll accents, in similar fashion, about the edges. A pair of angel heads are carved at either bottom corner at the underside of the medallion. This piece is raised upon a rectangular-shaped base, with flattened bottom allowing it to stand up on its own. Areas of gilt and old paint are highlighted about various areas of the carving, with a great old patina throughout. The piece remains plain on the backside, making it best suited placed against a wall. This large Portuguese church panel from the early 20th century, would make a stunning decorative object for your home, perhaps seated atop a fireplace mantel or console table.
