19th C. Spanish Colonial Religious Painting
A Spanish Colonial religious oil on canvas painting, a rendition of "The Dream of St. Joseph", from the 19th century, artist unknown. This antique Spanish Colonial painting depicts Mary kneeling in prayer at bedside to left, with St. Joseph (the father of Jesus) sitting, hunched over in slumber, as the Angel Gabriel hovers at top right (suggesting to Gabriel that he should marry the pregnant Mary, as the child is a gift from God and that would create a holy family). It is framed within a beautifully carved and gilt wood surround (the frame is old but may not be original to this piece). The painting has some crackling, as would be expected for its age, but is in otherwise very good condition. Artist is unknown, as there is no obvious signature visible. This 19th century Spanish Colonial religious painting of the Dream of St. Joseph is a nicely-sized piece of art; approximately 4 feet in width and 3 feet in height (including frame).
