An Early 18th C. Rococo Wall Console, Italy
An exquisite Italian Rococo carved wood and gilt console table with putto from the early 18th century, possibly 17th century. This period Rococo wall console from Italy features a three-dimensionally hand-carved wood putto, with loincloth loosely wrapped between his legs. The putto has upraised arms, which gently caress the underside of the table top, while one foot is positioned firmly onto the lower base. He is beautifully framed between ornately scrolled Rococo style acanthus carvings, all having the same rich gilt finish. The table top is rectangular and black, allowing the carvings beneath to make the statement for this piece. The wood base, also in black, is nicely scalloped about the front and sides, while back remains flat to allow the piece to hug a wall. For better stability, we suggest this period Rococo console table should be bolted to the wall.
