Fine Console & Mirror by Johan Martin Berg
This is an exceptional finely carved & giltwood console with mirror from the Neoclassical period, created by Johan Martin Berg (1772–1852) in Gothenburg, Sweden circa 1820. This piece is of the highest quality from the Neoclassical period and a truly special and rare find. This Neoclassical Swedish piece consists of an elaborately carved & giltwood console with a rectangular-shaped inset white marble top. It has a beautifully carved apron, raised upon a pair of scale-carved legs, which terminate into clawed paws with carved leaf wrapped ankles. These flank a carved & giltwood lyre at the bottom, surrounded by a wreath, and rests upon a black platform base. An elegant pier mirror sits inset, atop the console, flanked by a pair of long halved-columns, drawing the eye upward to its arched top, abundantly carved with a foliage and fan motif, giving this piece a stature of over 9 feet in height. This splendid Johan Martin Berg giltwood console with mirror will be an elegant and stunning addition of neoclassical décor to a formal entry or living area.
